Remodeling after water damage: Tips from a homeowner who made it



Even though we were at the end of the hurricane season, begin restoration for us not until the following spring. It can take months for Insurance adjusters to release funds, and even longer to line up professionals to begin to rebuild if an entire neighborhood or community affected. So our restoration was not completed until a year after the storm hit. Recently I got a call from a family who needed design help for their home, which was flooded by Hurricane Sandy more than a year ago. They are still living in a temporary residence permit and are eager to see their homes rebuilt and completely renovated.
Needless to say, after water damage reconstruction takes time. For us, added live in Canada for complexity in order to restore our condo in Cape Cod. I am by no means an expert, but I will share with you some of our insights in the process. We just hope we won't ever have to know them again.
Prepare a sad greeting. Hi, construction site! I don't think there is any way you can prepare yourself for how it will feel. I just can't. This is what the main living area looked like when we arrived. We were reminded of how vulnerable we are to the whims of nature.
The furniture was all removed, wall to wall carpet ripped away. Bare concrete floors and a peeling ceiling surface was not inviting sights. Tired from a 12-hour drive, we set about the task of making ourselves at home.
