Kitchen Appliance Company wins war

A major Kitchen Appliance’s logistics division is celebrating after picking up a top prize for its company-wide recycling programme that saves hundreds of tonnes of waste every year.

They scooped the ‘Business Recycler of the Year’ award at the prestigious 2011 National Recycling Awards for its comprehensive environmental management system which takes in waste collection, vehicle emissions, energy reduction and water savings.

In 2010 alone, the company delivered over 400,000 products to customers’ homes , as part of the service, collected 644 tonnes of polystyrene, polythene, cardboard and wood packaging which were either recycled or reused, when previously they would have been sent to landfill sites. This meant that over 10,000 sets of new packaging didn’t need to be produced. ICL also collected over 100,000 scrap products which were then taken from a central depot to the nearest recycling centre.

As part of the programme, the company makes sure that no vehicles are more than five years old and has also introduced hybrid electric/LPG clamp trucks into its depots, which means that emissions are now 80 times less than they were before the programme started.

Intelligent lighting systems, more efficient load configurations, recycled water vehicle washes, staff newsletters and computer quizzes also play an important part in increasing environmental awareness and saving resources.
